Riese, Cooper Top Podiums at Broome-Tioga Mud Race!

By Jim Sanderson

BINGHAMTON, NY, August 21 2010

Hurd Motorsports, promoters of Broome-Tioga, hosted an AMA District three points race on August 22, in Binghamton, New York. Mother Nature brought a deluge of rain to the area early Sunday morning and the rain continued throughout the day. The promoter elected to reduce the race program to a seven lap one moto format due to the sloppy track conditions.

Corey Burnett, John Thierfelder, Kraig Riese, Tim Wiestner and Mikey Borchardt led the start of the 250 B moto. Burnett held the point at the start of lap two with Thierfelder in close pursuit. Riese, Wiestner and Borchardt followed. Thierfelder closed the gap on Burnett and made the pass for the lead on the challenging front rhythm section. Burnett was relegated to second.

The top five began to spread out by the start of the third lap. Thierfelder started lap four with a ten second lead and the top five remained unchanged until the end of lap four when Riese caught and passed Burnett taking second. Burnett was relegated to third.

Thierfelder held a ten second advantage until lap seven and looked to have the win in the bag until his motor succumbed to the conditions, forcing Thierfelder to retire to the pits with less than 50 feet to the checkers. Riese inherited the lead and took the win. Burnett, Wiestner and Borchardt followed.

Cody Cooper, Nick Kraeger, Schae Thomas and Dalton McCullough led the start of the Open Mini moto. The pack was all spread out by the start of the second lap due to the extremely adverse conditions. Thomas pulled off with a flat rear tire and was forced to take a DNF. McCullough inherited third. Cooper held on and took the win followed by Kraeger and McCullough.
