On the last day of the AHRMA Vintage National at Broome-Tioga, the racing took place on the former AMA Motocross Championship Series full National racecourse. Hurd Motorsports, promoters of this world class facility, provided a track groomed to perfection for the post vintage motocross machines that inspired the "long travel" revolution that transformed motocross into the sport it is today, a sport very different from the earlier, short travel era.

round nine of the AHRMA Northwest Maico & CZ National Post-Vintage Motocross Series at the
Broome-Tioga Sports Center on july 1st in Binghamton, New York.

The AHRMA Nationals feature three full days of amateur competition consisting of vintage cross country and trials, vintage motocross and post-vintage motocross. The vintage motocross riders in attendance raced on a National caliber grass track on Saturday, “something these riders hadn’t seen in some time”, said AHRMA’s northeast coordinator, Alex Moroz.

When the gate dropped for one of the largest classes of the day, the Grand Prix 500 Expert moto, Benny Durrough, Bob Speiss, Tom Schaefer and David Meakem led the charge. When the leaders descended the National hill for the first time, Speiss had taken the point position with Durrough close behind. David Percarpio came off the hill third, Schafer held fourth and Randy Smith rounded out the top five. On lap two Durrough past Speiss for the lead on the hill, relegating Speiss to second. The two leaders checked out, starting lap three twelve seconds ahead of Percarpio in third. Durrough had a two second lead on Speiss when the white flag came out but Speiss had the lead when he came off the hill a half a lap later. Speiss took the checkers with a four second advantage. Durrough, Percarpio, Smith and Schaefer closed out the top five.
